Worlds and Races

See http://www.catharsis.com/xeno/ for good ideas.

The inhabited of the known worlds on the Champions 3K universe fall in three basic categories: Humans, defined as obviously descended from Earth human stock with no signifcant deviation; Humanoids, which could include parallel evolution, genetically re-engineered humans, rapid evolutionary adaptation, or any other means by which you would have a race that is "almost human"; and Alien, these are the races that are blatantly non-humanoid.

Human

Earth and its colony worlds. In addition to Earth itself, there are a number of other planets which are ihabited by humans. Over the course of Humanity's exploration of space, several worlds have been discovered capable of supporting human life. The long since outlawed genetics programs from the savage early years of Earth's space-age stretched the the definition of "habitable", and may even be responsible for several of the "humanoid" inhabited planets, but sketchy historical records make such theories difficult to prove. In the more recent years, terraforming technology has expanded the scope of planets capable of supporting human colonies.

Native Powers: None

Biology

Physical Appearance: Upright bipedal beings with five digits per appendage. Sensory organs located in the head, which sits at the top of the upright body. Average height is 1.6 to 1.9 meters, average mass between 50 and 100 kilograms. Males of the speciese tend to be larger and heavies than the females.

Physiology: Terrans must consume a moderate (approximately 5% or body mass) amount of carbon-based biological matter each day, as well as ingest a similar amount of water each day. Food and water are ingested through a toothed opening located in the head of the creature, broken down by acidic liquids in the stomach, and absorbed though the intestinile lining into the body for use. Excess and waste materials are expelled through an opening at the terminus of the digestive system near the bottom of the torso.

The species is an oxygen breather, and expires rapidly if deprived of this gas. Atmosphere is taken in through either of two opening at the head of the creature (in addition to a nose, the creatures mouth is also connected to the respitory system). The air is forced in a bellows-like arrnagement of lungs which extracts the nessesary oxygen and oxygenates the vascular fluids (blood) of the creature, allowing the oxygen to cycle through to the individual organs that require it. The lungs then contract and expell the uneeded gases back out through one of the openings in the creature's head.

Terrans have a well developed nervous system. Just behind the eyes, and situated between the three maws, lies the brain, a four-lobed mass of that trails off into a spinal cords that run the length of the torso. The spinal cords are supported and protected by a semi-rigid column of alternating bone and soft tissue hollow disks that the nerve fibre passes through.

As a vertebrate, Terrans have an interior skelatal support system that provides a foundation for the musculature system to attach to. Most muscles are grouped in opposing pairs, allowing the application of significant force in both pulling and pushing maneuvers. The lower two limbs, the stronger set of the four, are designed to allow Terrans to walk in an upright position. These lower limbs also provide the primary lifting strength. The upper two limbs are each terminated with long, multijointed digits; one of which is opposable; allowing for a high dregree of manual dexterity.

Terrans have two genders. The child bearing subtype (the female) is typically slightly smaller and weaker than the non-child bearing subtype (the male), but also tends to be more resistant to pain and disease as well have generally having slightly faster reaction times. The non-child bearing subtype (the male) provides genetic material during the act of conception, but then makes no other biological contribution to the child bearing process. Terran young gestate for approximately 10 lunar cycles insed the mother and are born live (as opposed to eg birth). Newborn Terrans are complete dependant on its parents, and have a long weaning cycle. Physical adulthood is reached in 12 to 16 planetary cycles.

There are a number of racial subtypes to the Terran species. The differences are primarly aestetic in nature, dealing mostly with pigmentation and typical facial features. Due to several thousand years of racial interbreeding, it is difficult in the modern age to find "pure" members of any racial subtype in any but the most isolated of planetary locales. Some near-pure subtypes can be found on a small number of early settled Terran colony worlds.

Culture

A commonwealth founding member.

The well spring of humanity. Every planet whose inhabitants are human can trace its history back to mother Earth somehow. Besides being the source of humanity, Earth is also the capital of the Commonwealth. As such, aside from the influence Earth exerts on it's colony worlds, Earth and it's amalgamated culture is also responsible for much of the direction and shaping of the Commonwealth. The exact start date of Earth's interplanetary exploration program is lost to historians (see History), as is the number of colonies that were formed during these early pioneer years.

Earth's political system is very much a scaled down version of the Commonwealth political system - a representative republic with an elected head of state (the President of Earth).

Many of Earth's old languages have survived into the present day, but the "offical" language of Earth (the language of the government) is Eurenglish, a language who roots can be traced back primarily to English but based as far as possible on words common to the chief European language. Galactic, a truly artifical language based on the common phonemes and memes of the orginal member worlds of the Commonewealth, is spoken by a large percentage of the population of any metropolitan area of Earth.

Technology

Earth is a tech level 12 world, which means that hand-held, non-laser, energy weapons commonly available. They can produce starships capable of travelling faster than light. Advanced androids are possible, but not culturaly popular. Energy shields found in large vehicles. True anti-gravity technology attainable. Very recently, Earth has begun to produce some technologies which are considered beyond tech level 12. They have begun experimenting with terraforming planets and genetic engineers have produced, at a cost that makes it impractical, true synthetic life forms.

System

The Terran solar system consists of one star (Sol); nine planets, sixty six (66) satellites of the planets, and a large number of small bodies (the comets and asteroids). The inner solar system contains the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars; the planets of the outer solar system are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

The orbits of the planets are ellipses with the Sun at one focus, though all except Mercury and Pluto are very nearly circular. The orbits of the planets are all more or less in the same plane (called the ecliptic and defined by the plane of the Earth's orbit). The ecliptic is inclined only 7 degrees from the plane of the Sun's equator. Pluto's orbit deviates the most from the plane of the ecliptic with an inclination of 17 degrees. The above diagrams show the relative sizes of the orbits of the nine planets from a perspective somewhat above the ecliptic (hence their non-circular appearance). They all orbit in the same direction (counter-clockwise looking down from above the Sun's north pole); all but Venus, Uranus and Pluto also rotate in that same sense.

Most of the planets in the Terran system are colonized to some degree. The exception to this is the gas giants, which all have at least one colonized moon.

Tech Level: 12

Moons: 0

Unusual Characteristics:

Society: Representative democracy

Biology

Human - See Earth.

Culture

An Earth Colony and Commonwealth member.

Originally named Proxima 1, Europa was settled in multiple waves of mostly European colony ships. This has given Europa a distinctly European culture. It has a parliamentary government made up of elected officials headed by a Prime Minister selected by parliament.

Technology

Europa was an Earth colony from the first boom period of Earth colonization and it brought with it all of the knowledge of Terran technology to that point. It took many years for them to build up a suficient industrial infrastructure to begin making use of and adding to that technology, as survival was hard in those early colonial days. Consequentially, even though Earth experienced a long period of technological stagnation, Europa has not exceeded Earth technologically, and in fact, has not quite kept up. Europa is a solid tech level 12 world.

System

Europa's system is a Trinary System is also surrounded by an Oort Cloud, a cometary belt of small ice/methane bodies very similar to the one surrounding our own system. This Oort Cloud orbits at about 50,000 AU from the two primary stars.

The three star that make up the system are Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B, and Proxima Centauri. Proxima Centauri, Europa's sun, is a main sequence red dwarf star. This would normally not support planets warn enough for human habitation, and it indeed, Europa is a very cold planet. Europa is one of four planets that orbit Proxima Centauri, and the nearest to the star.

Other

There were other planets in the Centauri system that would have appeared to be better choices, but at the time the original colony ship reached the system, Proxima Centauri was the closest star and the colony ship lacked fuel for an extended exploration of the system, so they chose the closest planet that would fit their needs. Europa is a cold, unpleasant world; but it is rich in mineral resources.

Humanoid

The facts of why so many planets are inhabited by races so similar to human are mostly unknown. Parallel evolution has been postulated; as well as the idea of a common "seed" or "parent" race from a period well in advance of any historical records; and in some cases, there is evidence suggesting that some planets were originally colonized by humans who have changed (or been changed) slightly on a genetic level to adapt to their new home. (Even though historical records are sketchy, the fact that there are a few planets who's inhabitant are known to be gene-altered humans make this a possibility for those planets who's histories extend back less than 1000 years.)

U'Nae

Star Type:

Size Medium

Gravity Medium

Climate Sub-tropical

Population
Heavy (8 billion)

Tech Level: 12

Moons: 2: 1 small uninhabitable, 1 medium habitable

Unusual Characteristics:

Society: Strongly class-based Oligarchy.

Native Powers: Super disguise

Biology

Humanoid partial shapeshifters, the U'Naens can slightly alter their appearance within the bounds of the basic humanoin shape (two arms, two lages, one head, etc, etc). Skilled U'Naens are capable of not only emulating another humanoid race, but imitating exactly a specific being of that race.

Culture

A Commonwealth member world.

The U'Naens were one of the first alien races encountered by Terrans during there expansionist period. Several years after Earth's first encounter with the U'Nae, it was discovered that U'naeans had been using their ability to alter their appearnance to infiltrating Earth and it's colonies (disguised as humans) for almost one hundred years. The U'Naean had been secretly spying on the humans to learn whether or not the humans posed any threat to them, and whether or not U'Nae could conquer the humans. War never broke out, but there were some minor military scirmishes. The whole ugly situation strongly colored Earth-U'Nae relations for generations afterwards and, although a founding member world of the Commonwealth there is still a great deal of distrust directed towards the U'Naean by many human factions.

As far as the ruling council of the Commonwealth is concerned, the past is the past. U'Nae is a member in good standing in the Commonwealth and their natural ability to blend in with other humanoid races has provided many valuable members to the Protectorate Corps' Special Operations Division.

Technology

U'Nae, like Earth, is a tech level 12 world; however, it has been one considerably longer than Earth. During it's early, warlike expansionist period, U'Nae's technologial advacement was staggering - both on its own merit, and due to technology assimilated from other cultures. Since settling into a state of non-aggressive coexistance with most other worlds, U'Nae's technology has advanced extremely slowly.

System

The U'Naean system is a single star system with 7 planets.

consists of one star (Sol); nine planets, sixty six (66) satellites of the planets, and a large number of small bodies (the comets and asteroids). The inner solar system contains the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars; the planets of the outer solar system are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Most of the planets in the Terran system are colonized to some degree. The exception to this is the gas giants, which all have at least one colonized moon.

Zus

Star Type:

Size
Medium

Gravity
Heavy

Climate
Sub-tropical

Population
Medium

Tech Level: 11

Moons: 0

Unusual Characteristics:

Society:

Native Powers: Extremely strong.

Biology

A heavy gravity planet - the natives; though mostly human in appearance (tend to be considerably more massive than typical Earth human); are extremely strong and durable. Capable of withstanding the crushing gravity of their homeworld, the Zusans are incredibly strong, and more resistant to injury than most humanoid races.

Culture

A Commonwealth member world.

Theuseans can best be described as Utilitarianists. Their government is minimalist, and their legal system is built along a moral theory according to which an action is right if and only if it conforms to the principle of utility. The characteristic feature of this theory is the idea that the rightness of an action entirely depends on the value of its consequences.

The result of this cultural bent is a people with an oddly different viewpoint from most Commonwealth cultures. In essence, the Zuseans follow a benign form of "the end justifies the means" philosophy in their lives - any action which results in a greater good is, by definition, good. In many respects, this tends towards a very black & white view of the universe, but not in an expected way as they are going to pay much more attention to the concequences of an action that the action itself.

This philosphy is such a strong part of their culture that Zus has little need for a strong government presense in people daily lives - leaving Zus' government free to concentrate on outworld interests.

The people of Zus tend to calm and stable, almost stoic by human standards. Acting in anger is virtually unheard of (as it could lead to improper consequences).

Technology

Technologically, Zus remains slightly behind the Commonwealth core worlds; but this is to be expected of a people who examine the consequences of every action as closely as the Zuseans do.

System

Zus is the second of four planet out from it's sun. A medium size, highly dense planet, Zus exerts a gravitational pull that would it extremely unpleasant (and possibly dangerous) for a standard human to exist in. Zus itself has no moons, although it is believed that it did have one (or more) during an earlier stage in it's planetary development that were pulled into it's own mass. The core of Zus is madeof an incredibly dense material not unlike that which a White Dwarf would be comprised of.

Zus' nearest neighbor, Zed Sub-Prime, is a marginally inhabitable world. The atmosphere contains suficient ozygen to sustain carbon-based life, but if also somewhat corrosive. Theusean's have little difficulty with it, but less "durable" races would find it toxic.

The remaining to planets are both gas giants, incapable of supporting permanent colonies; although both have mutiple colonized moons in enclosed cities.

Biology

A planet with a genetic histroy shrouded in mystery (even the Pimeans aren't really sure why they are the way they are). Scientists cannot even begin to theorize what type of conditions would induce an ability to shrink at will to come about, but that is exactly what the Pimeans can do. The intensity of this ability varies from person to person, although there is some consitancy with families, but every native of Pim can reduce their body size to some degree.

Mostly human in looking,, the Pimeans are slightly built, and somewhat elfin in appearance with teardrop shaped eyes and slightly pointed ears. The Pimeans also have a subtle racial trait wherein, without really even wanting to, they will subcouncsiosly attempt to adjust their size to match the beings around them.

Avia

Star Type:

Size: Small

Climate: Temperate

Population: Very Light (less than half million)

Tech Level: 9 (tech level has dropped since founding of colony due to insufficiant industrial base to maintain higher tech leve)

Moons: 2, small, uninhabitable.

Unusual Characteristics: Over abundance of mountains and canyons.

Society: Theocracy

Native Powers: Winged flight

Biology

The genetic manipulations were done quite impressively. Born with small wings on their back, these wings grow rapidly throughout the first few years of a child's life, and by the time the child is walking he's ready to take his first tentative glides. By the time a child has reached adolencense he's no longer merely gliding, but actually flying under his own power. The Avians pay a price for this adaptation though. In order to make flight possible, the overall body mass had to be reduced so, much like birds, the bone Avian bone structure is very lightweight, and not a strong as their human ancestors'.

Culture

A non-Commonwealth member world.

Avia was a planned colony right from the beginning. The inital colonists spent a collective fortune on genetic research to have themselves altered in such a way as to be able to fly - and to breed true with ability. Avia itself is a striking world, blessed with an over abundance of mountains and canyons. So geologically "blessed" as to make ground travel difficult - which was precisely the type of world teh founders were searching for.

Avians take their ability seriously, and all Avians train to home their flying ability to it's potential. The typical Avian will spend as much time as physically possible in the air, landing only when circumstance require it.

Biology

Natural shapeshifter, the natives lack a distict, set form or shape.

Culture

The Thenoxians, although member of the Commonwealth, are one of the races the least is know about by the other races that make up the Commonwealth Insular by nature, the Thnoxians tend to keep to themselves, and only allow non-Thenoxian's to visit their world under rigidly controlled conditions. The early days of fist contact were marked by violence and misunderstandings, and very nearly led to war between the small number of planets that made up the Commonwealth and Thnox, due to repeatecd attempts to land a vessel on the planet.

The Thnoxians have engaged in a Commonwealth-wide conspiracy of silence to protect a racial secret - the Thnoxians (and almost every other life form on the planet) are a true morphogenic life forms. They have no "true" form. The Thnoxians have kept this fact a secret from everyone due, in part, to their own insular nature - but exasperated greatly by the events that center around the initial introductioninto the Commonwealth of the U'Naens. The Thnoxians fear that, based on the distrust other races have for the chamleon-like U'Naens, discovery of their shapeshifting abilites would result in an even greater magnitude of hatred directed at them.

During those times when aliens are allowed to visit their world, the Thnoxians appear to be friendly, but somewhat stiff and aloof. Humaniod in appearance (because they choose to appear so when visited), skin tone a pale blue color, and altogether unassuming.

Society: Benign dictatorship

Native Powers: High STR, incredible durability

Biology

A world where the evolution process started from a completely different direction than most planets. The bodies of the natives of Cadimia are composed entirely of a metalic substance. The exact nature of the substance has yet to be defined, but it has a high tensile strength, is not particularly brittle, and is magetic (not to the extant iron is though, more like nickel). This unique body makes the Cadimians somewhat stronger than humans, and incredibly more durable.

Culture

A Commonwealth member world.

The leader of Cadimia rules absolutely, like all recorded leaders before him. When he dies, a new leader will declare himself (or herself) and simply be accepted by the population. The Cadimian's have never been able to fully explain to outsider how this phenonenon works, or why only one Cadimian declares, but it's worked for more generations than history records and they have no intention of changing now. It has to do with the fact that, in a odd way, all adult Cadimians are one with their planet and are part of a unique form of world consciousness that, while not really granting interpersonal communication, allows them to instantly make planetwide concensus decisions.

Herpein

Star Type: V-G6(Main Sequence, hotter than average, yellow star)

Size:
Medium

Gravity: Medium

Climate:
Tropical

Population:
Light

Tech Level: 4

Moons: 2, neither inhabitable

Unusual Characteristics:

Society: Multiple factious empires

Native Powers:

Biology

Herpein are long (up to 30') serpent-like beings with six arms (on the end nearest the head) and six legs (about half the way back). They weigh 20 lbs/foot of length. The serpentine body is completely prehensile and extremely flexible allowing a Herpein to grasp with their tail and coil up into a space 8'x4'x4' (small enough to move about in human habitations). The skin is covered in very tough scales (back and sides) and hide (underside). The hands end in retractable razor sharp talons. The have no legs, moving much like a snake except for usually having the front 20% of their body raised in the manner of a humanoid torso.

The Herpein were "created" via a long-term eugenics program initiated by an as yet un-encountered race that the Herpein refer to as Gignere. The Herpein themselves have been unable (or unwilling) to give out sufficient clues to identify or track down this race.

Culture

Lacking even the pretense of a single world government, and generally being considered technologically to far behind the standard Commonwealth world, Herpein is not a member of the Commonwealth.

The Herpein were used primarily as shock troops and gladiators. They were bred for strength, agility and viciousness in order to best fulfill those roles. This has had a profound affect on their culture. Long abandoned by the Gignere (estimated close to 2000 years), the Herpein have reverted to multiple warring empires, all still practicing gladiatorial combat and dueling as a means of legal and personal resolution.

Herpein are anti-social by nature, and become particularly aggressive in groups. Individually, Herpein are remarkably intelligent (for a non-technologically advanced society) and understand the rule of law.

Technology

When first encountered by the Gignere, the Herpein were non-sentient, and thus had not developed any technology. After being abandoned by the Gignere, the Herpein retained none of the Gignere's technology and have had to build everything for themselves. Currently Herpein is at a level similar to Earth during it's Medieval Age. They know how to produce steel, but it's not common yet.

System

The planet Herpein is the third planet in a 5 planet system. The first two planets in are incapable of supporting life due to the extreme heat (Herpein's sun, although roughly the same size as Earth's, is considerably hotter). Herpein itself is a very warm world, tropical across most of its surface, with large deserts at the equatorial regions. The farther two planets out have not been extensively surveyed; although it is know that neither supports life, it is not know whether or not either could.

Planetoid

Varied (artificial)

Population
Very Light

Tech Level: 12

Moons: 0

Unusual Characteristics: Not actually a planet, but a hollowed out planetoid.

Society: What society, it's a prison.

Native Powers: None

Culture/History

A Commonwealth holding.

Planet Stronghold was concieved the brainchild of Cauley Breehn, Assistant Minister of the Interior for Peacekeeper Force Matters. A massive maximum Commonwealth penitentiary, Planet Stronghold is located inside a hollowed out planetoid in a slow orbit at the outskirts of Earth's solar system (it's orbit is wider than Pluto's and it's off-plane by a noticeably larger degree than Pluto, ensuring that it is very rarely ever actualy near a planet), where only the most dangerous criminals are detained.

The Specially trained guards are armed and armored with the best weaponary Protectorate Corps R&D has to offer. Even should a criminal devise a means of escaping, they would still have to deal with the fact that they are on a remote planetoid well off normal starship routes.

Technology

The very best that the Commonewealth has to offer.
