The Stuff Heroes Are Made Of
Web Directory
- Champions /
Hero System Points of Clarity List - This is the unofficial Champions/Hero
System Points of Clarity List. It is a resource of official and unofficial
clarifications to many commonly asked questions and ambiguous rules.
- Characteristics,
Champions, and Changes - Gary Johnson's article on using real world
information that we can draw upon to increase the realism of Champions characters.
What follows is a discussion of how to take advantage of the "real-world"
setting of the Champions game system and create character designs with more
plausible Characteristics (plausible, that is, for people without superpowers
that enhance their natural abilities). Along the way, I'll suggest some rules
changes, a new power, and some guidelines role-players can follow if they
like the ideas in this article.
- Creation Workshop Updates
- Download the updaters for the products you have purchased. These files are
beta test versions for you to try out. Released versions are posted on the
Hero Games web site. Please let us know if you find any problems.
- Franklin
W. Cain' HERO files - Notes and "house rules" for the HERO System (Champions,
Fantasy HERO, (etc.)).
- The Game Master's Superpowered
Web Site - The site dedicated to the best computer aid to running the
Hero System! The Gamemaster's SuperPowered Companion
- Geoff Speare's Hero System
Website - A page whose main purpose is to serve as a central
reference for house rules. Submit your house rules, get them indexed, then
people can easily find and compare house rules on a given subject.
- Hero
Lite - Jim Dickinson's Fuzion Alternative
- Hero System Movement
and Throwing - This is an attempt to create an alternative system for
movement and throwing in HERO System that tries to more closely (or at least
more consistently) follow the laws of of physics, without becoming overly
complex. Similar attempts have been done before, but I apply a slightly different
tack to it, and try to keep it simple (even at the cost of some exactness).
- Hero
System Resources - Links and files for the Hero System, particularly Hero
Games' flagship game, Champions.
- Hero System Rules
Distilled - Character Disadvantages, Powers Summary, Advantages Summary,
Combat Manuevers, Combat Reference Tables.
- The HERO System Ultimate
Powers Book - Welcome to the Hero UPB, a net-compilation of superheroic
powers, magical abilities, and strange talents; all written up in Hero System
terms. The UPB project was begun in January 1998 by members of rec.games.frp.super-heroes
who, inspired by the Marvel Super-Heroes Ultimate Powers Book, decided to
write up their favorite powers and abilities in a form usable in Hero System
games.
- House
Hero - House rules modifications and clarifications.
- House Rules
for the Hero System - Here's my page of house rules for the HERO system.
Many of these rules were designed for a fantasy hero setting, and some could
prove unbalanced in other settings; in particular, be somewhat careful about
uncontrolled powers.
- Incomplete Characters
- An extrapolation from the rules for the various incomplete characters (character
without all of the characteristics) to make them into a set of rules for building
more such entities.
- Mark
Hughes: Hero System House Rules - These rules are heavily optimized towards
a low-power Fantasy Hero or Cyber Hero game - they're probably inappropriate
for Champions.
- The
Master Lists of Physical and Psychological Limitations - This list
was originally conceived and created a couple of years ago by Chris Maka.
While he originally had it on his own website, the original page has since
been removed from the web and Chris's email address is dead. As a result,
I have taken it upon myself to expand and maintain the list.
- Percentage Hero
- The following rules allow Skill rolls, Attack rolls, and Characteristic
and Perception rolls to be made on percentile dice (d100) rather than on 3d6.
This has two advantages: first, it eliminates the 'breakpoint' values of Characteristics
for these rolls. A Characteristic of 13 will no longer be a 'magic number'
-- Characteristics of 12 or 14 will be equally cost effective. Second, most
people find it easier to understand probabilities expressed as percentages
than as chances of rolling under a target number on 3d6; people have a better
intuition for "74%" than for "12-" even though the two are almost identical.

Variants in HERO - Hero System House Rules
- Vox On ... The
HERO System - The HERO System is possibly my favorite RPG overall, due
in no small part to its flexibility across all genres. If God required the
world to pick just one game system as a universal standard, in my opinion
gamerkind would probably be least hurt by selecting HERO. This is, however,
not to say the HERO System is perfect. It, like all games, has its own blemishes.
In many cases these are internal burps and dents in the rules that could have
(and should have) been banged into shape with a quick glance. What follows
is my own repair job on those unsightly inconsistencies.
